Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about EV charger installation

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

It depends on three things: how far the charger sits from your electrical panel, whether the panel has capacity to spare, and the charger you choose. A garage install close to a panel with room on it is a modest job. A long run to a detached shop, or a panel that needs an upgrade first, costs more. We look at your setup and give you a free, fixed quote before any work starts. Call (208) 603-4812.

Can my electrical panel handle an EV charger?

Often yes, but it has to be checked, not guessed. A full-speed Level 2 charger draws 48 amps continuously on a 60 amp circuit, which is a serious load next to a well pump, a heat pump, and an electric range. We run a load calculation first. If the panel is tight, options include a lower charging speed, a load management device, or a panel upgrade, and we will tell you honestly which is worth the money.

Should I get the Tesla Wall Connector or a universal charger?

If your household is all Tesla, the Wall Connector is hard to beat: up to 11.5 kW, weatherproof, and reliable. If you drive another brand, or want one charger that covers guests and future cars, Tesla's Universal Wall Connector adds a built-in J1772 adapter, and there are other good UL-listed universal chargers as well. Many newer non-Tesla EVs are moving to the Tesla-style NACS plug anyway, so either path ages well. We will match the charger to the cars you actually own.

How much faster is a Level 2 charger than a regular outlet?

A standard 120 volt outlet adds roughly 2 to 5 miles of range per hour, which can mean days to fill a big battery. A Level 2 charger at full output adds around 30 to 44 miles of range per hour, so the car is simply full every morning. In winter that margin matters more, because cold batteries charge slower and use more energy per mile.

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in Idaho?

Yes. A hardwired charger circuit is permitted electrical work in Idaho, and it gets inspected. We pull the permit, do the work to code, and handle the inspection as part of the job, which also keeps your homeowner's insurance clean if there is ever a claim.

Is there still a federal tax credit for home EV chargers?

Not for new installs. The federal credit for home charging equipment ended for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026. Some utilities offer their own EV or charger programs that change over time, so it is worth a quick check with your utility before you buy. We will flag anything we know about for your area when we quote.

Can the charger be installed outside or in an unheated garage?

Yes. The chargers we install are rated for outdoor mounting and are fine in an unheated garage, including North Idaho winters. The practical questions are placement ones: where the car parks, cable reach to the charge port, and keeping the connector out of the snowbank. We sort that out during the site visit.
